These were taken by me, obviously all rights remain with RTE.

I loved this interview. Gabriel was witty, charming, poignant and articulate as ever. He made me laugh out loud when he told the story of Bono singing to his unborn son… and also when he told us about the conversations he had with his then teenage daughter.

He bought a tear to my eye when he spoke about his father, especially when he said that his dad’s way of getting him to stay a bit longer on visits was to offer him “more tea before you go”.

The interview with Gabriel was almost 20 minutes long and then we got an added bonus when the host got Gabriel to stay whilst he interviewed Richard E Grant 😀 the two are great friends apparently and it showed. When Richard listed all the reasons he’d cast Gabriel as his father in the film Wah Wah, Gabriel had an “Oh Gosh” kind of look on his face.. and then pretended to pay Richard money for saying nice things about him 😀

If you can catch this on the RTE player before it goes then it well worth the 30 minutes or so of your time.

It also made me wish, not for the first time, that we had a decent chat show like this on British television. Proper interviews over a proper length of time. I’m sure we could get rid of some of the crappy ‘talent’ and ‘reality’ shows to make room for one. Would make my licence fee a little more worth while.
